The Holiday Model Trains are Back!

We will have a temporary model train exhibit available for viewing from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, from Dec. 18 through Jan. 3. If you stop in and mention to the front desk that you saw this on our website, we'll give you one free historic Union Pacific holiday postcard while supplies last.

The tradition of model trains at Christmas has been around for a long time. Some say it dates to the 1940s, when railroads helped bring thousands of American servicemen home for the holidays. Others say it's because the first regularly scheduled passenger train in the U.S. began in 1830 on Christmas Day. Regardless of the true origin, the sight of a model train circling a Christmas tree continues to delight children and is a source of precious memories for adults.

Carrying on this heart-warming tradition, the museum will have a fully operational table top N scale train in the Building America exhibit through January 3. Along with the operating train, provided by Bill Dodge, a generous museum patron and volunteer, there will be four display cases full of model trains of all shapes and sizes, including highly customized pieces that are part of Union Pacific's corporate collection.

Dodge will be available to answer any and all questions for the duration of the exhibit.
