Union Pacific Railroad Museum Celebrates Native American Heritage Month with Community Event

Union Pacific Railroad Museum and Union Pacific Railroad's Council of Native American Heritage (CONAH) will celebrate Native American Heritage Month by offering a free event, highlighting unique Native objects in the museum's collections. The presentation, which will be led by author and Professor Taylor Keen, will be held Saturday, Nov. 9 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the museum, 200 Pearl St. in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

"This is a unique opportunity to discover the meaning of some of the rare objects on display in the collection, some that are not usually on display," said CONAH President Mitch Clemons.

Keen co-authored the article, "Tribal Sovereignty and Economic Development," published in the Smithsonian Institution's "Handbook of the North American Indians." He serves as the Director of the Halo Institute at Creighton University and is a full-time lecturer for Creighton University's College of Business Administration and a former member of the Cherokee Tribal Council.

People of Native American heritage are integral to Union Pacific Railroad's more than 150-year history and its continued success as one of America's premier railroads. They helped protect UP crews during construction of the first transcontinental railroad in the 1860s and today support the railroad's efforts to build America. For the past several years, CONAH has played a major role in supporting employees of Native American heritage, continuing their legacy and fostering a diverse, inclusive workforce at UP vital to prosperity in 21st century business.

The free event will be held on the first floor of the museum. No reservations are required.
